Women In Medtech: Bettina Westphal

Careers for the head and heart

Meet women who are changing lives at LivaNova

Bettina Westphal

Bettina Westphal is an Innovation Manager at LivaNova in Munich, Germany. She is responsible for addressing the future within LivaNova by systematically working on the four key principles of innovation: talent, governance & processes, operating model, and the underlying innovation culture that enables all. She has been with the company since July 2019.

Q: What led you to a career in medtech?

A: To be honest, when I started at university, I chose renewable energy because I always wanted to do a job focused on sustainability. Then, a few of my colleagues told me about medical technology. I attended some lectures and became fascinated by the opportunity to help humans improve their health, or even survive, with technological devices. While pursuing my bachelor’s degree, I changed my field of study to medical technology, because in my opinion, it supports sustainability. Doing a job which brings about something good is important to me because we spend a lot of time on our job.

Q: Do you have a woman who's mentored you in your career?

A: Honestly, it is my mom. Even when I was young, she taught me that I can achieve whatever I want. I think it is really important, especially for women, to know that no matter their goal or how high it is, they can reach it.

Q: What keeps you the most engaged at LivaNova in your work?

A: I get challenged, which presents a big opportunity to grow. But, even more important, I get to work on products that really change lives. This is my biggest motivation.

Q: Would you recommend this job at LivaNova to your friends?

A: Definitely. At LivaNova, you can feel the passion we have for our products. Whether you’re a woman or a man, I think making products that treat the heart is huge. I would recommend LivaNova to anyone because you have the opportunity to grow through tackling challenges.

Q: Tell us a fun fact about yourself. What do you do for fun?

A: I really love to be sporty. I’ve been cycling a lot and, two years ago, I rode more than 1,300 kilometers in five days through the Alps.
